0-50-100 / Salt Sculptures | 2022

This project examines the methods used to compress digital and physical information. It includes two distinct pieces that depict various results of condensing data.

To address the effects of the pandemic and urban pollution, the artist has created two salt sculptures using found objects that have been preserved in crystalised salt and epoxy resin. He was inspired by the works of Sigalit Landau and traditional salt-making techniques and collected seawater from the Plymouth coast to slowly evaporate it, resulting in the salt residue being fused with the materials.

The video piece depicts how information is lost during the process of uploading and downloading data on Instagram. The same recording goes through the same procedures repeatedly and each time it is posted, some information is lost and cannot be recovered. The artist visualises this loss of information by displaying the original video, the one after 50 uploads, and the one after 100 uploads.
