Sugar Glass | 2022

Similar to the Agar Bioplastics, this work illuminates the structural capability of another biodegradable material, derived from sugar. The wooden structure that emerged through the sugar glass is inspired by bamboo weaving techniques, originally derived from Chinese and Southeast Asian cultures.
It is vital to isolate the sugar glass structure from moisture, to prevent the changing of its consistency. Therefore, by encapsulating them inside bell jars and accentuating the details using light from beneath, the artist envisions a scientific ambience where unknown organisms are being preserved. Displaying entities in this way not only highlights the characteristics of the material but also challenges the perception of time. Detached from its outer space, it seems like time functions differently inside the glass dome, decelerating the process of ageing and decomposition.
